Exploring Handheld, Agent-based, Multimodal Collaboration

چکیده
Designing software for handheld computers is challenging because of their limited computing power, memory, display size, and the choices of hardware and operating systems. In addition to these challenges, collaborative handheld applications must deal with distributed computing and other network-related issues. We believe that by designing these applications as multimodal, multiagent systems, we can address some of these challenges. Taking this position, we have designed QuickSet, a multimodal application for group work on electronic maps. By leveraging QuickSet’s agent-based roots, we were able to quickly add collaboration capabilities to it. In this paper, we will discuss QuickSet’s collaboration capabilities, the ease with which they were added to the user interface, and plans for future extensions to these capabilities.

Multimodal Maps: An Agent-Based Approach
In this paper, we discuss how multiple input modalities may be combined to produce more natural user interfaces. To illustrate this technique, we present a prototype map-based application for a travel planning domain. The application is distinguished by a synergistic combination of handwriting, gesture and speech modalities; access to existing data sources including the World Wide Web; and a mo...
متن کاملFlexible Speech and Pen Interaction with Handheld Devices
An emerging research direction in the field of pervasive computing is to voice-enable applications on handheld computers. Map-based applications can benefit the most from multimodal interfaces based on speech and pen input and graphics and speech output. However, implementing automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis on handheld computers is constrained by the relatively low computation...

Multimodal systems process combined natural input modes—such as speech, pen, touch, hand gestures, eye gaze, and head and body movements—in a coordinated manner with multimedia system output. These systems represent a new direction for computing that draws from novel input and output technologies currently becoming available. Since the appearance of Bolt's [1] " Put That There " demonstration s...

متن کاملAn Agent-Based Middleware for Supporting Spontaneous Collaboration among Co-Located, Mobile, and not necessarily Known People*
Efficiency oriented activities require some people to collaborate in order to achieve better results. People, who don’t necessarily know to each other, need to be organized, communicated, and coordinated effectively to achieve a successful outcome. Today’s technological advances permit to set up a group of handheld and wireless devices as a network infrastructure for the development of applicat...
